I went to Rockport last weekend to attend the opening
of 'Maine Wood 2014' in the Messler Gallery at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. This was the fourth editon of the Center's biennial exhibit showcasing the work of furniture makers, turners, carvers and sculptors. I was fortunate to be included among the twenty artists and artisans juried into this fine show. The jurors for the show were Jonathan Fairbanks (the director of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Ma.),  Asa Christianson (editor of Fine Woodworking, Newtown, Ct.), and Laura Mays (the director of the Fine Woodworking at the College of the Redwoods in Ft. Bragg, California).

The other artists juried into the show were Nick Barboza, Virginia Blanchard, Eben Blaney, Judy Bonzi, Ray Carbone, Clara Cohan, Wayne Hall, Richard Kaeyer, Albert Kolodji, Gregg Lipton, Jim Macdonald, Jonathan Moro, Stephen Porter, Malcom Ray, Brian Reid, Kevin Rodel Michaela C. Stone, David Talley, and Hank Tyler. I had a good time meeting and chatting with bird sculptor Hank Tyler about his techniques working with bubinga wood. Above are a few photos from the show, including images of the People's Choice Award winner the Strip-built Sea Kayak by Richard Kaeyer, and the Best in Furniture Award winner, 'Cirrus II' by Eben Blaney. If you would like to see images of all of the show entries, as well as all of the award  winners, go to Current Exhibitions section of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship website.
Additional images from the opening can be viewed on the Center's Facebook page. The shows runs through April 2, 2014.
